Season’s Greetings
As I reflect on this past 12 months and reach out to our valued Clients, friends, and those who we do business in many differing ways I ponder the new world order and what has changed.
Christmas 2019 saw record drought compounded by catastrophic fire events challenge many of us on the East Coast forcing adaptation and improvising on a large scale.
Yulgilbar Station was turned upside down during this period losing substantial fencing, livestock, and infrastructure, along with the challenges of feeding daily 4000 cattle for 2 ½ months after losing 32 000 acres of standing dry matter.
Moving on, 2020 has seen events unfold that many generations have never seen before in terms of world-wide disruption and tragedy, with Covid-19 changing how we live, communicate, conduct business, and travel restrictions imposed never before experienced on a global scale.
The impact to “lifestyle”, the economy and human behaviour has been profound. Thru adversity comes adaptation and new ways of doing business and communicating. People fighting over securing items like toilet paper in super-markets have defied logic during this time, but certainly have shown how fear of the unknown can change people. Many of us have had to forgo social interaction and have been unable to say goodbye to friends and love -ones, while joyous occasions such as weddings have been either delayed, put on hold, or held with only a few able to witness. Psychological impact has been extensive to many and the mantra “RU OKAY” has never been more important!
Country People living in rural and remote areas probably have less felt the social impact as opposed to our City Cousins as we are more used to less social interaction.
12 months ago, “Zoom” was just emerging technology that now is a mainstream way of doing business, conducting meetings, and keeping in touch.
Simple movements like crossing State Borders to conduct business has become “war like” in impact and has been a disrupter of mammoth proportions. In the “Bush” greetings have long been made with a firm handshake, often being the unofficial sealing of business done and a sign of being made welcome.
I admit to having struggled with this change and have continually failed with this behavioural change.
My wife Lorraine has converted us all into using hand sanitiser and I can also attest that it also makes a good fire lighting fuel!
Conducting an Annual Production Sale right at the beginning of Lock downs certainly brought about new levels of challenge and the restrictions impacted on those wishing to attend from interstate.
Online live streaming of auctions is here to stay; albeit extremely challenging with “Connectivity Issues” remaining a front and centre problem for Rural and Remote Locations.
Pre-Sale Video of Sale cattle is now considered a given along with providing as much data as possible.
Going into Christmas 2020 here at Yulgilbar the season has been marginal with a “Cease to Irrigate “being in place up until a week ago, making some cropping and livestock decisions challenging.
The past week has seen an incredible turnaround with up to 16 inches of rain falling on the Station (more rain than we saw in total for 2019 in a little over a week!).
We hope those who are still missing out on rain receive a “Wet” Christmas and continuing dry areas get their share and a break in the season.
The bright spot for the year has been the strength of the Cattle business. New Levels have consistently been reached and records broken. With the prospect of continued good summer rainfall forecast, restocker demand should see Cattle prices remain high.
On behalf of Yulgilbar Pastoral Company, I wish to sincerely thank those of you who purchased our genetics this year, either privately or by auction, that these cattle have all settled into their new environments and performing to your expectations. Equally those underbidders who did not secure cattle this year please know how much we value your ongoing interest and competition on our cattle.
As always support of our breeding value is highly valued by the Yulgilbar team and we are keen to continue and build on our business relationship with you in terms of ensuring we provide you with Industry Focussed, Commercially Relevant genetics that perform for you and provide performance results that make you more dollars!
Looking forward, we are really excited about where the genetic program at Yulgilbar is headed and what the blending of new bloodlines from both the Cream of Australian and North American bloodlines is now producing for our operation.
We remain very interested to hearing how our cattle are performing for you; and appreciate feedback (both good and bad as your repeat custom is important to us.
Yulgilbar will be again looking to buy back weaner heifers sired by our bulls in the coming year to background and mate in calf. Please let me know if you have cattle that may suit us!
We are holding our first Yulgilbar Genetics Commercial Female sale on Thursday 18th February 2021 at NRLX Casino when we plan to sell 700 mainly pregnancy tested in calf females carrying Yulgilbar genetics. These females are a combination of Station bred and client’s heifers we have purchased, grown out and mated back in calf to Yulgilbar sires.
Equally if you have lines of cattle carrying our bloodlines coming onto the market, we are keen to assist in promoting them thru our Website and Social Media network for you (wherever you may be located as the demand for Yulgilbar bloodlines continues to grow.) We have several feedlots now paying a premium for our bloodlines as recognition of the proven performance of Yulgilbar bloodlines.
Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year.
Kind regards,
Rob Sinnamon
